The Archpriest Paul O'Callaghan was appointed Dean of St. George Orthodox Christian Cathedral January 1, 1993. Formerly the pastor of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in San Diego, CA, Fr. Paul was assigned to St. George Cathedral upon the elevation of our former pastor (then Archimandrite) Basil Essey to the episcopate in May of 1992.
A native of Marin County, CA, Fr. Paul's home parish is St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church of San Francisco, CA. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Religious Studies at California State University, in Chico, CA. Upon completion of his undergraduate work in 1977, Fr. Paul was blessed by Metropolitan PHILIP of the Antiochian Archdiocese to begin theological study at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, MA. He was ordained by Metropolitan PHILIP to the Diaconate and Priesthood in January and May of 1979 respectively, and then assigned as interim pastor of St. Mary's Antiochian Orthodox Church in Cambridge, MA in August of that year. After receiving his Master of Divinity degree from Holy Cross in the spring of 1980, he was assigned to the assistant pastorate of St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral, Los Angeles, that August. He remained in that position until being transferred to the pastorate of St. George, San Diego, on January 1, 1984. In October 1990, he was elevated to the rank of archpriest. After the consecration of Bp. BASIL, Fr. Paul was asked by Metropolitan PHILIP to assume the position of Dean at St. George Cathedral in Wichita.
Fr. Paul and his Khourieh, Jeannie (Linane) were married in 1978. They have four children: Leah (b. 1979), Sean, (b.1982), Paul and Christine (b. 1986), and five grandchildren. He is the author of The Feast of Friendship and a number of articles on theological topics, as well as being a contributor to the commentary on the Book of Revelation in the Orthodox Study Bible.
